Dehradun: A harrowing episode captured on a smartphone – an alleged attempt to pull a woman into a moving car in broad daylight – has sparked outrage in the city’s Nalapani Chowk neighbourhood. After the footage went viral, the Uttarakhand State Women’s Commission took suo motu cognizance of the case.
What happened?
On Wednesday morning, a resident of Nalapani Chowk was riding her scooter back home after dropping her daughter at a college bus stop. Several masked men in a black sedan began tailing her and, according to the video, tried to thrust her into the vehicle.
Quick intervention
The woman fought back, managing to escape the assailants’ grasp. Nearby female sanitation workers from the Municipal Corporation witnessed the struggle, rushed to the scene, and confronted the perpetrators. Their timely action forced the men to flee.
Commission’s reaction
Commission Chairperson Kusum Kandwal immediately contacted SP (Rural) Jaya Baluni and Circle Officer Vandana Verma. She was informed that a case has already been lodged at the Raipur police station and that the investigation is underway.
Police response
Three special investigation teams have been constituted to track down the suspects. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the incident site and surrounding streets to identify the individuals and the vehicle involved.
Calls for thorough probing
Chairperson Kandwal ordered a rigorous probe, urging police to explore every possible motive – whether an old personal grudge, a dispute, or a broader criminal conspiracy. She praised the courage shown by the victim and the sanitation workers, stressing that swift, decisive action is essential to safeguard women’s security.
“Any act that creates fear among women must be treated with utmost seriousness. The perpetrators will be brought to justice,” Kandwal said.
The Women’s Commission will continue to monitor the investigation’s progress and ensure that the case does not lose momentum.
