Dehradun: In a bid to transform the city into a cleaner, plastic‑free zone, the district administration has stepped up its enforcement drive against single‑use plastic. Guided by District Magistrate Dr. Ashish Chauhan, the operation now spans all 100 wards of the Municipal Corporation.
The team has mobilised fifty sector officers who are conducting surprise checks across the city. To date, inspectors have visited 1,776 commercial premises, targeting shops, eateries and service outlets that manufacture, store or sell the banned material.
Regulatory action was taken against 762 establishments found violating the ban. Among them, 550 received challans and the administration collected fines amounting to ₹1.96 lakh. In addition, officials confiscated 532 kg of prohibited single‑use plastic, which has already been destroyed.
Beyond Penalties: Raising Public Consciousness
The district’s strategy is not limited to monetary penalties. Officials stress that the core aim is to curb the circulation of disposable plastic and to educate the public about its environmental impact. Traders and residents are being briefed on safer, eco‑friendly alternatives.
Call for Collective Action
Authorities urge both merchants and citizens to stop using, storing or vending banned plastic items. They underline that achieving a pristine, plastic‑free Dehradun requires more than top‑down directives—it demands active participation from the community at large.
