Homs, Syria – A passenger bus transporting local company staff near the Masyaf Bridge in the western Homs countryside was suddenly hit by a hail of gunfire, killing at least seven people and wounding four others. The vehicle was returning the workers to their homes after a full day’s shift.
SANA, Syria’s state news agency, said the attackers remain unidentified. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency care while security forces moved swiftly to secure the area.
Formal Probe Initiated
Authorities have launched an official investigation to determine who ordered the strike and why. No militant group or individual has claimed responsibility, and officials have not publicly identified any suspects.
"We view this attack as an attempt to destabilise the region and undermine security," said Brigadier General Bassem Mohammad Shaaban, commander of the Homs Internal Security Forces.
Forensic teams are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Workers Targeted on Their Way Home
Initial reports confirm the bus was carrying civilian employees back to their families after completing their duties. Emergency responders transported the casualties to hospitals throughout the Homs governorate, where they received treatment.
Officials stressed that the investigation will continue until the full circumstances are clarified and those responsible are brought to justice.
Syria’s Enduring Security Challenges
The incident occurs against a backdrop of persistent insecurity that has lingered for more than 13 years of conflict, even after the fall of Bashar al‑Assad’s government in December 2024. While authorities strive to stabilise the nation, sporadic shootings and violent episodes continue to surface across various provinces.
